Leadership Team

Hench Murray, Head of School, first served as Head of School from 1981 to 1995 and returned to the position in 2005. Hench received both a B.A. in English and a M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.  He has been involved in the field of education for 40 years.  Hench and his wife live in Radnor.

Penny Moldofsky, Director of Lower School, has been a teacher and administrator at Woodlynde for almost 20 years.  She received both her B.S. and M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.  She is also a Pennsylvania Certified Reading Specialist, holds a Wilson Reading System Level II Certification, and has been active in education for over 35 years. Penny currently resides in Paoli.

Karen Buchan, Interim Director of Middle School, was appointed Interim Director of Middle School for the 2007-08 School Year. She joined the Woodlynde Community after a serving as Head of School at Goshen Friends for seven years. In addition to her extensive teaching experience at schools such as Newtown Friends, Holland Middle School and Dunn Middle School she has worked with the Trenton Board of Education. Karen has served on the Boards of George School, Newtown Friends, and Haddonfield Friends. She holds a B.A. in English Education from the College of New Jersey and a M.S. in Library Science from Rutgers University. Karen and her husband reside in Wyndmoor, PA.

Kevin Miller, Director of Upper School, was appointed to the position for the 2006-2007 school year. Kevin received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University and earned his M.A. and his Ed.D from the University of Virginia. He has held positions in several independent schools, most recently at Blue Ridge School, where he served as Hall Master, Teacher, and Academic Dean. He has served as teacher, administrator, and coach during his 18 year career as an educator. Before coming to Woodlynde, Kevin served on the faculty at Curry College in Massachusetts. Kevin resides in Phoenixville.

Dave Shank, Dean of Students & Director of Operations, has been a member of Woodlynde's faculty since 1980. During that time he has served as Head of the Physical Education Department, Director of Athletics, teacher, coach, and, currently, Dean of Students. A graduate of Penn State University, Dave and his family live in Glen Mills.

Diane Tuppeny-Hess, Director of Advancement, has been associated with Woodlynde for many years. A former Board Member and chair of its first capital campaign that raised over $1.5 million. Diane graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.in elementary education. She served as a public affairs professional for over 20 years before leaving the corporate world to work at Woodlynde. Diane lives in Ardmore.

Irene van Zijl, Business Manager, has worked at Woodlynde since 1992. A native of Scotland, Irene received her education in South Africa. She and her husband also lived in Tehran and London before moving to the United States, where she worked in an insurance company prior to joining the Woodlynde Commmunity. Irene and her husband currently reside in Malvern.

Mariandl Hufford, Director, Center for Learning, Teaching, and Professional Development, returns to Woodlynde after spending two years at the Agnes Irwin School as the Director of Support Services. She served as Woodlynde’s counselor from 1994 to 2005, taught Latin during those years, and assumed the responsibility as Director of Support Services. During her tenure Mariandl successfully launched and directed the Resource Fair and our Parent Education Series. She earned her A.B. in Classical Studies from Bryn Mawr College and went on to receive an Ed.M. in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard and an M.S.Ed. in Psychological Services from the University of Pennsylvania. Mariandl is also a certified facilitator for Dr. Mel Levine’s nationally recognized Schools Attuned program. Mariandl and her husband live in Devon with their three children.
