
The Chess Club is open to all middle school students. Currently members of the chess club meet one day each week during lunch. The club plans to acquire clocks for timing chess moves, purchase instructional DVD's, and develop an online option for playing chess against the computer.
G.I.R.L., Growing Into Real Leaders, is offered to girls in 7th and 8th grades. The ten- week program is designed to empower adolescent females to become self-assured, self-aware, and self-reliant by providing a safe, comfortable, and fun environment where they can learn self-esteem and positive decision-making skills. Students meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30 p.m. Activities include interviewing a female role model, learning about issues that confront women around the world, and creating a quilt that includes attributes of female leaders.
Student Government is comprised of four officers and two representatives from each grade. Each fall, students in grades 8 through 11 are invited to nominate themselves for student government. Students write speeches which they deliver to their classmates prior to elections. The major initiatives for student government are Spirit Week and Homecoming activities. Students also spearhead service projects and volunteer activities, such as the annual Thanksgiving food drive.
The Informer, the student-run school newspaper, is published quarterly. The students determine the content for each issue. Topics include current school news, comic strips, an advice column, horoscopes, and reviews of movies, music, books, and video games.
Mondrian is a Middle School Honor Society that recognizes students for the traits of responsibility, respectfulness toward all, a positive attitude, a cooperative spirit, attentive behavior, and persistent and active learning in and outside of the classroom. Students are elected to Mondrian by a unanimous vote of the Middle School faculty.
Members of Woodlynde's chapter of the National Honor Society are selected by a committee of faculty members. Induction ceremonies are held in the fall and spring. Applicants must submit a resume and be interviewed by the committee. In addition to scholarship, candidates must excel in the areas of character, leadership, and service. Membership is open to juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.2 or above.
